"Conserving 20th-century architectural heritage while optimizing contemporary academic study spaces. Cavaleri Partnership executed sensitive interior conservation, acoustic re-engineering, and bespoke study infrastructure updates for the Grade II listed Rosemary Murray Library at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge."
Heritage Conservation in Grade II* Modernist Architecture
Designed by celebrated mid-century architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the Rosemary Murray Library stands as a Grade II* listed landmark of UK Brutalist architecture. Modernizing academic facilities within such a historic, light-flooded vault structure requires balancing delicate historic preservation with contemporary environmental standards.
Cavaleri Partnership was appointed by Murray Edwards College, Cambridge to oversee crucial spatial reconfigurations, internal environmental controls, and fabric maintenance.
Key Architectural & Conservation Interventions
The physical scope delivered tailored spatial and acoustic solutions across the library:
-
Acoustic Vault Management: Integrated discreet, micro-perforated acoustic treatments designed to reduce sound reverberation beneath the iconic vaulted concrete ceilings without altering visual sightlines.
-
Bespoke Digital Study Carrels: Re-engineered student reading stations featuring integrated power, network cabling, and LED task lighting matched to historic timber joinery.
-
Daylight & UV Preservation Strategy: Specified specialized UV-filtering film and solar controls to protect rare book collections while preserving natural illumination.
-
Concrete & Brickwork Conservation: Managed non-destructive cleaning and structural maintenance of fair-faced concrete arches and internal white masonry walls.
Architectural Leadership in Higher Education & Conservation
This intervention demonstrates Cavaleri Partnership’s specialized capability in Grade-listed 20th-century building conservation, academic library planning, and technical estate updating across Cambridge institutions.
