Residential Development - Biggleswade
"Creating intimate urban communities through continuous terraced architecture. Cavaleri Partnership conceptualized a continuous U/O-shaped terraced housing development, engineered to frame a private central courtyard while optimizing site density, security, and acoustic privacy on non-detached residential plots."
Continuous Terraced Block Architecture & Courtyard Placemaking
Designing high-density residential housing within urban and suburban contexts often requires moving away from suburban detached layouts toward cohesive, perimeter block architecture. Formulated around a fully enclosed O-shaped footprint, this terraced development scheme establishes a continuous structural perimeter that defines clear public fronts and private inner courtyards.
The master plan demonstrates how non-detached terraced housing typologies can optimize plot coverage while fostering safety, community cohesion, and sheltered microclimates.
Key Architectural & Spatial Strategy
-
Enclosed Central Courtyard: A private internal green square shielded from external street noise, providing shared gardens, pedestrian play areas, and communal seating.
-
Continuous Facade Rhythm: Carefully proportioned non-detached terraced elevations incorporating step-backs, varied brick tones, and articulated entrance porticos to maintain streetscape character.
-
Acoustic & Environmental Shielding: The continuous terraced perimeter acts as a sound barrier against adjacent roadways, creating a quiet inner acoustic sanctuary.
-
Dual-Aspect Living Layouts: Terraced units designed with dual-aspect living rooms, maximizing cross-ventilation and natural daylight from both outer street and inner courtyard elevations.
-
Integrated Pedestrian Access: Secure archways and subterranean parking access points embedded beneath the terraced wings, prioritizing pedestrian movement inside the courtyard.
