Recreation Grounds - Harston, Cambridge
Harston Recreation Grounds Pavilion Extension
This proposed project modernizes the existing Harston Recreation Grounds building by introducing a comprehensive, wrap-around extension designed to maximize community engagement and connection to the surrounding parkland. The design strategy focuses on creating a seamless transition between indoor facilities and the outdoor recreation fields.
The core architectural intervention features a flat-roofed structure with extensive overhangs that encapsulate the original brick building. Floor-to-ceiling, fully openable glazing wraps the primary facades, allowing the interior community and dining spaces to be completely opened to the elements during warmer months.
Key features of the proposed extension include:
-
Flexible Community Space: The fully glazed enclosure provides a bright, versatile interior suitable for a cafe or community gatherings, offering uninterrupted views of the recreation grounds.
-
Covered Outdoor Patio: The extended roofline creates a large, open-air sheltered area supported by robust columns, providing a weather-protected space for sports spectators and park visitors.
-
Seamless Integration: The use of transparent materials and flush thresholds ensures the building acts as a permeable pavilion rather than a closed-off structure, actively inviting park users inside.
