Residential Development, Richmond Road - Cambridge
Reimagining modern urban infill density in prime central Cambridge. Cavaleri Partnership formulated an innovative architectural design proposal for two blocks of contemporary residential houses on Richmond Road—incorporating terraced clay tile facades, full-height glass atrium stairwells, setback zinc mansard rooflines, and private courtyard access.
Proposed Architectural Massing & Material Palette
Designing high-density residential housing within established Cambridge residential corridors like Richmond Road requires balancing contemporary architectural expression with traditional neighborhood scale.
Formulated as a conceptual design proposal for a suburban infill plot, this scheme introduces two distinct blocks of modern family houses. The building envelope combines warm brick plinths, horizontal clay/terracotta tile cladding on the middle storeys, and a setback zinc standing-seam mansard roofline designed to maximize upper-floor ceiling heights while maintaining a low street-level profile.
Proposed Building Features & Amenity Specifications
Derived strictly from the architectural visual rendering, the proposed master plan incorporates:
-
Two Independent Residential Blocks: A twin-block massing layout engineered to optimize site density, privacy, and solar orientation across both structures.
-
Vertical Glazed Atrium Feature: A full-height glass circulation core dividing the main facades, providing natural light to interior stairwells and communal entryways.
-
Setback Zinc Mansard Roof Architecture: Metal-clad top storeys featuring continuous linear clerestory dormer windows to flood upper living areas with daylight.
-
High-Performance Glazing Systems: Floor-to-ceiling ground-floor windows and deep-set upper casements engineered for thermal insulation and acoustic isolation.
-
Paved Courtyard & Off-Street Parking: Integrated private driveway access leading to off-street vehicular parking bays with perimeter planting beds and boundary fencing.
-
Sustainable Building Envelope Concept: Designed to integrate high-efficiency thermal insulation, low-carbon heating systems, and natural ventilation mechanisms.
